Dazed

Dazed is an independent bi-monthly British youth culture style magazine founded in 1991. It covers music, fashion, film, art, lifestyle and literature, which relates to their choice of the representation of people as it targets a specialised niche group. Dazed is published by Dazed Media, an independent media group.
The main image takes up the greater portion of the page reinforcing her relevance in the magazine. Dazed magazines always use one person on the front cover of their magazine in order to let the audience pay particular attention to the person. The use of the midshot could connote that the producer wants the audience to be able to relate to her on the same level as them. The attention is drawn to her face as she tilts her head and looks directly into the camera. Strobe lighting was used as it creates an artificial white colour in the picture. There is the use of colour contrast in the image. Her hair and jacket match the colour chosen for the background which is in contrast to her shirt and the text on the image. This was chosen by the producer to bring a sense of uniform and organisation. Apart from these major colours used, there are other colours, such as gold and red used on her accessories which represents her more as being a female.
The masthead is written in bold in the impact font style. It is in a glowing white colour which makes the audience notice it immediately when they look at the magazine. Dazed magazine uses the same format of their masthead on each issue. This makes it familiar anywhere to their readers. The writing on top of the first D reads “Declare Independence”. This helps to show the beliefs the magazine has and gives the audience a sense of empowerment.
The person on the cover of the magazine is FKA Twigs. She is an upcoming english singer and songwriter. This is the reason behind the choice of her name, she said “It’s just a collection of letters. I was gonna be like FK1 Twigs…or AFK Twigs…I just wanted a selection of letters that sounded quite kind of masculine and strong. FKA just worked". This might be the ideology of the producer to represent her to show that women are as equal as men,as this is one of the magazine's major beliefs. It also brings about the strapline Future Shock as the front of her hair is neatly braided, while the back is puffy and messy as if she’s been partially shocked/ electrocuted. The text could also relate to the hashtag, #The future is female, with her looking in a more uncontemporary way as she wears a leather jacket, which is stereotypically a feature of male motorbike riders. The representation of a black female on the cover also shows the ideology of dazed as all people being equal, and creates a further sense of empowerment.

On the left hand side of this double spread, there is a main image with only little text. The image is a man divided in two halves with different facial expressions and gestures. The caption of the image reads “What’s inside the mind of a skater/security guard”. Respectively on the left half of the image, it is a close up shot with a somewhat screaming facial expression, which could connote excitement or fun. While on the right half, it is a midshot with a rather solemn facial expression and crossed arms which could connote seriousness. This relates to the text as it represents the mindset of two whole different personalities. Also on the image, there's the text “no comply” and a large × sign in red which connotes danger, and shows a distinction between these two. However, the creator used the same person to represent both characters. This could connote that even though they have opposite beliefs, they are all the same and equal, which brings about the ideology and beliefs of the magazine.
On the right hand side of the double spread, there’s a text article and an image. The image of the clothing of a skater, this was used because skaters are the main people being represented in this issue. The standfirst reads, “They are the bitterest of enemies and will be until the end of time…”. This refers to how skaters feel about cops and security guards. However, the article is not necessarily about skaters and guards, but instead, it’s about being trendsetters rather than merely trend followers and how the UK was brought down and overshadowed pre 1960’s by other countries, but is now flourishing.
The purpose of this article is to inform the audience about their rights and freedoms, showing that no one has control over them.
Skateboarding as a sport evolved in the early 1950’s. Since the beginning of the sport, authority has associated skaters with law breaking and negative influences. The whole article and the main image is in black and white, (apart from the parts in red which could connote danger or negativity) even though colour was dominant at the time of production. This might be the intention of the text creator to show that skaters and authority have never seen eye to eye since historical times.
A contemporary audience might see this article as conventional. Skateboarding has become a very common sport over the years. The choice of the outfit; a plain t-shirt, sneakers and tattered jeans by the text creator was also to make it seem more conventional, as this simple but informal fashion choice has evolved.
The parts of the spread are widely detached and makes it very organised and orderly. This makes the audience able to distinguish and understand each part, and also read the article clearly.
The ‘no comply’ text on the left side is written in lowercase letters, however, it is in a sans serif font style. Respectively, this could connote the juxtaposition between skaters being casual, and authority being formal.
The mode of address on the left page is direct. This was used by the text creator to attract the audience, which could ‘manipulate’ them to read the article on the right page. However, the mode of address used in the article is indirect, and the lexis is quite formal. It might also require a certain level of knowledge to understand the article as there are many historical references in it.
On this double spread, there are two different genres present. The images relate to sports, while the main article relates to fashion. Audiences like to anticipate what is familiar about genres, but difference is also essential to sustain their appeal. The text creator therefore merged these genres to create interest for different groups of audiences.
